‘MIND OVER MOUNTAINS’
“I was down on my honkers picking up cigarette butts that were stuck in the paving joints. The streets leading from Quay Street up Mainguard Street and onto Shop Street were fairly busy with revellers moving around coming from fast food restaurants, night clubs parties and so on. I hadn’t noticed a man coming up behind me. He was smoking and the worse for wear at this stage. I looked up at him as he greeted me. “Ah jayzuz” he said “If it isn’t Máirtín Óg, is this what you’re at now” he said mockingly. I didn’t recognise him. He didn’t let it go there, “The man who had all the trucks and machinery and look at him now, picking butts off the streets, you’ve come a long way”!!I stood up and eyeballed him. “Actually I have come a long way,” I said. He smirked and waddled away up town. I will never forget that moment at 6.45am on a Galway Street. It was hugely significant at that time in my life. I had suffered massively with the trauma and loss I had been subjected to. I had struggled to cope with the pain, the sense of despair and hopelessness and the embarrassment. The loss of friends and family, my businesses and my identity as a human being had hit me hard. I had turned a corner though at this stage. I had accepted my situation and I was on my journey to re-establish myself. I had indeed ‘come a long way’.”
